2D animation would be a lot bigger file, you could do a 3D character animation that lasted hours and the models file size would stay small
There's pros and cons with both, If you need detiail, effects and post processing then 2D is the way to go, if you need small files and speed go 3D

Rigging a 3D character takes a lot of time and you can run iinto export issues, once the character is set up its still a challenge to get it to move realistic
But 2D can be justt as time consuming, just go with whats easier for you
